Deep Pink Bi-Color Clematis

May in My Garden - Magenta Clematis Whose Name I Forget

what I always do is forget them. An online search brought me to this one, which sounds familiar.
Clematis are easy to grow and reward us year after year with beautiful jewel-like blooms.

The name of this little vine with the huge blooms has long been forgotten. Tags get lost in our tangle of underbrush and no matter that I think I'll always remember the names,

April in the Garden - Vinca major (Periwinkle)

I know it's considered a noxious weed in some environs but here on the cool northern California coast, Periwinkle is very containable and easily pulled out of places where it shouldn't stray. Plus it can hide some otherwise not-so-pretty views.
Me, I was happy to catch the unfurling.

Clematis Josephine

It's difficult to tell from the photo but each of these flowers is about 8-inches across. I find them otherworldly with their leathery petals and tightly closed, mysterious centers that become flowers in their own right. Years ago when I planted this I thought it was a Nelly Moser. Now I know it's name is Josephine. Read here about it's habit of growing a flower within a flower within a flower.

Wisteria Floribunda 'Violacea Plena'

Coming into bloom now in my garden, I pass by this mass of deep amethyst flowers on a sturdy vine as I go to and from the greenhouse, the heady perfume making me stop for a moment and murmur a thank you to the wisteria goddesses.
I first grew Violacea Plena , a rare double-blossom wisteria, in my garden in the Sacramento Valley. I had just found the one and really didn't know what I had until it began blooming, as the tag didn't give its variety. When we moved up here, it took me several years to find another. Now they're more easily found, but not as popular as the singles. With their rich perfume, I can't imagine why.

Spring in the Garden - Clematis Montana 'Mayleen'

Later on in the season this pretty pink clematis will share the spotlight with the Sally Holmes rose that grows near it; opalescent pink rose buds twining and dancing amid the clematis blossoms.

Purple Clematis

This clematis, whose name I believe is Clematis jackmanii, graces our front gateway and nods its lovely purple 8-inch blossoms as we pass by.

Early Spring Clematis

Clematis Apple Blossom "armandii" intertwines with my equally apple blossom-like pink rose, which is not yet in bloom, just on the other side of my office window. This time of year I look out through a peaceful tangle of green and pink.
