February in the Greenhouse - Christmas Orchid in February

I am going to be away for several weeks and wanted to leave you with this photo of my still-unfurling orchid.

It was on its last legs when I finally moved it from my home into the greenhouse last fall. Now it has three flower stems besides this one, and I'm hoping they will be blooming on my return.

Greenhouses rock!

Don't forget me. Two weeks is a long time in the blogosphere. I'll catch up with you all soon.

Happy Gardening!

February in the Garden - Winterbells (Correa 'Alba')

Correa 'alba', White Correa, Winterbell, is in full bloom right now; one of the few winter-blooming shrubs in my garden. She's rather camera shy, preferring to stay out of the limelight and blend in with the background. I think I've caught her with her guard down.

Native to Australia, click here for more information on the species.

A Brief Illumination

After a gray wet day

All of a sudden the sky cleared

The sun "came out"

Of nowhere

It lit up the sky

Backlit the clouds

And was gone

Almost as if it had been an illusion

My camera and I chased its fleeting light
- All five minutes of it -
All over the yard

Just to capture those rays of glory

Of sustenance

Of hope

Of life

Of need

Of wonder

Of nurture

Before it sank beneath the horizon.

I have such a primal gut-deep soulful relationship with the sun.

Gosh, am I light deprived or what?

Ed note: An hour later it was raining as we made our way to our neighbors for dinner.

Just now, coming home, the stars are out, glistening like diamonds.

I can't wait for morning . . .

Shadow Shot Sunday #90 #91 - Geometric Shadows

The skybridge connecting upper levels of the art galleries at the SFMOMA

Skybridge with people.

The shadows above the skybridge are cast by this huge skylight.

A work of art in itself.

Visit Hey Harriet's Shadow Shot Sunday this week to see more shadows from all over the globe.

2/6/10: This post is for SSS #91 which will appear next Sunday at Hey Harriet's. To see this week's SSS post #90, click here. Sorry about all this Tracy. I think I'm on the right track now, if a bit ahead of myself. Or maybe I'm behind?

February in the Garden - First Leaves

Browns, grays and the non-deciduous greens of redwood trees are the palette of my garden right now. So much so that tiny leaves like these, stretching all of their half-inch length to see the sun, go un-noticed amid the tangle of bare branches and twigs.

It was after I saw this variegated Spirea beginning to bud that I really saw how the garden has been stirring to life. More bud photos to follow ...
