Signs of Spring: Camellias

The Camellia shrub just east of the house had shot up to such a height that it was blocking our morning sun. So, even though I loved all those pink blooms each late winter/early spring, I whacked it back a month ago to a light-allowing 5-feet.

I thought it wouldn't bloom at all this year.  I was so wrong.

Yet another sign of spring in my garden.

What signs of spring are in yours?

Spring Walks - White Camellia

Sometimes, while on a walk, I'll come across a blogworthy flower. Then I'm really glad that I (usually) always pack my camera with me.

The camellia shrub was about 10-feet tall - more like a tree  I had to reach to get this shot.  Lucky me.

Did you know that this beautiful camellia is related to the plant that grows the tea you drink?  True.  I have a packet of Camellia sinensis seeds that I'm going to plant in the greenhouse this year.

Then ...   Well, we'll see ...

Happy gardening!

January in the Garden 2010 - Pink Camellia

I know it's still winter but I'm feeling an ever so slight shift in the air. It may just be the January Thaw that we often experience up here. January being relative - it could be in February, or December, but mostly January. The rains cease - for a while. The sun shines - for a while.

Buds are beginning to swell on the wisteria, the quince bush has a few lonesome blossoms and a single narcissus has bloomed, as well as this pink camillia. My spirits have lifted too.

Here's what was happening in my garden one year ago today.

Ed note: Yes, I've changed my blog template. I finally took the plunge and converted to the new Blogger. It may take me a while to get all my links and things back, but I'm working on it. Please be patient with me. :)
Another Ed note: What took me so long? I love this new template!

White Camellia

The weather may be cold and gray in my little corner of the northern coast of California, but it was sunny, warm and wonderful in Sacramento when we visited family over the Thanksgiving weekend.

Look closely and you will see the blue sky peeking through the leaves of this lovely camellia.

A Camelia To Brighten An Otherwise Gray Day

A six-foot tall shrub, covered with these pink blooms, is framed by our breakfast room window. Quite a delight in this gray, cold and rainy weather we're having.
