Summer in The Garden - Leucanthemum vulgare or Ox-Eye Daisy

Ox-eye daisies, botanically known as Leucanthemum vulgare, grow with wild abandon in my garden, punctuating the dry grasses with deep green foliage and bright white, yellow-eyed flowers.

I do have to pull some of them or they would take over everywhere. Not a bad-looking weed, is it?

If you'd like to see more, take a look at these photos.

Pretty Will Get You Nowhere

Scotch Broom, or Cytisus scoparius, is a noxious weed in Humboldt and Del Norte counties, crowding out native grasses and wildlife habitat.

There were lots of broom plants on our property when we bought it 15 years ago and now, with hard work and diligence, only a few pop up now and then.

Like this one.

The shrub is easily 4 feet tall but I didn't see it growing amongst the huckleberry bushes until the other day when it seemed to blossom overnight.

It's a pretty thing in full bloom, I must admit, but I'm headed out with a spade and loppers right now.

How Tall is Your Lawn?

Here is a photo of the "amazing growing grasses" that I call a lawn.
Well, I call it a lawn when it's mowed. Right now it's overgrown weeds.
A prairie really. No seeds were planted to create this lawn.
It's simply the grasses, daisies and berries that grow in this part of the world.
Of course I did plant the orange crocosmia you see in the foreground and the
tea tree, maple, rose and clematis you might be able to see in the background.
But the rest of it is wild stuff. Sigh... Lots of gardening to do.

This is a photo of the "lawn mower". Never was a horse so happy in her work.
