Sillywalk
Pin It
I would have loved to have been there when the mystery bird was making these tracks on the beach. Still, being able to take the photo is gratification enough.

Geese Over Clam Beach
Pin It
If you click on the photo you'll get a better look at the geese that were flying over Clam Beach this morning as we were taking a walk along the newly opened "hole in the Hammond" section of the California Coastal Trail, the Hammond Trail. We've been waiting a long time for this section of trail to be completed. It now offers a continuous walking trail along the ocean from Little River near Trinidad, all the way to Arcata, a distance of about 13 miles.

Life's A Beach
Pin It

This afternoon brought a flurry of emails between Beach Nighters to get out and enjoy this deliciously warm weather while it lasts, especially after last week's cold and wet. We never know when we'll finally call it quits and have to move our gatherings indoors for the winter.

When the weather is this beautiful and the call goes out, we don't have to think twice, we just pack up dinner and head for the beach. Lamb stew, olive bread, red wine, good friends and a spectacular sunset. Life just keeps on giving.

Dark Woods

On the overland trail between Trinidad State Beach and College Cove. The dark, twisted branches remind me of spooky childhood nursery rhymes.

Trillium or Lily?

I spotted this yesterday, growing along a creekside trail just off the beach. It looks like a trillium, but I'm waiting for verification. I'll place a link when I know for sure.

My friend Donna sent me the correct name of the beautiful and unusual lily pictured above: Fetid Adder's Tongue (Scoliopus bigelovii).
Also called "Brownies", I've walked by the foliage before and wondered about them but there were no compelling blooms to write home about. Had I seen anything like this, I wouldn't have passed up taking a photo.

Grandmother Rock

She looks out over Trinidad State Beach and Pewetole Island. Kerchief on her head, hands resting in her ample lap, she waits. She is called Grandmother Rock. Photos taken March 11, 2007, copyright Raven Ridge Gardens.

Daffodils
Pin It
Daffodils. Those portenders of spring are ablaze with bloom here on the north coast. Giving hope that the end of this cold, wet, snowy, incessantly gray winter is near.
From top to bottom:
Photo 1: Single example of a drift of daffodils on the bluff overlooking the ocean. These have a double trumpet, are growing where there is no garden, and re-bloom like clockwork year in and year out.
From my garden, photos 2 and 3.

Multi-Hued Mystery Plant
Pin It

Encountered while taking a beach and town walk last weekend, it looks kind of like bamboo. A Google search did nothing to solve the mystery. Does anyone know what this is?
